Many Farmers Took Part in ZIM-SHEP Gender Mainstreaming Training in Midlands!!

Gender considerations are key to development of the agriculture sector in Zimbabwe. Small scale farmers especially women who are the majority are most engaged in taking care of the household and farm work to mention but a few. SHEP recognises the importance of gender in achieving its objectives of improving small scale farmers' livelihoods through market oriented production.

SHEP's gender mainstreaming motto is promoting ‘men and women as management unit' for successful farm enterprises in the spirit of love and respect. The ZIM-SHEP team conducted the gender mainstreaming Training of Trainers and farmers around target schemes in Midlands province from the 9th to 13th of September 2019. A total of 167 farmers took part comprising 105 females and 62 males.

After the training, a women farmer said; ‘My husband has told me he wants to help with other activities. He also said we should make decisions together.' Another men said; ‘We as men should not only support our families with finance but also by sharing household and field work. The reason why our women are stressed and cannot perform fully their responsibilities is because they would be tired. When I go home I will speak to my wife and propose areas where I can assist to lessen the burden'.

ZIM-SHEP continue to consider the aspect of gender equality and equity in every activity to increase productivity and incomes and eventually improved livelihoods for small-holder horticulture farms.
