What is “English Rakugo”?

On the evening of May 30th, participants from a dozen countries, including Uganda, Egypt, Thailand, Pakistan, Malawi, and Vietnam, came to JICA to listen to Rakugo.

What is “English Rakugo”?
Since it would be the first time for the participants to listen Rakugo, we asked Mr.Eiraku to first talk about what Rakugo is, its background, how to enjoy it, and how people in other countries react to it.
Mr.Eiraku explained about what rakugo is using an example of a story at a nice fast pace. When he pointed his finger, "Over there！" then everyone there looked in that direction at once.
“But what you do is not to look in that direction." Mr.Eiraku said.
The interesting thing about rakugo is to use one's imagination and guess the story from the words, facial expressions, and gestures of the performer who plays several roles at once.

　　
And they knew how to enjoy Rakugo, the first Ms.Ichirin starts with "Tenshiki". She said with a smile, “after hearing this story, you will never forget what tenshiki is.” That was exactly right,it is unforgettable.

The next was "Summer Burglar" by Mr.Simon.
A funny story in which the position of a burglar and his victim was reversed.
The contrast between the 'no worries' attitude of the victim and the disturbed burglar is very interesting
and from this short story you can feel how Edo people were caring for others and tough also.

　　　
After that, Ms.Ichirin performed "Tamasudare".
A performance using the simple bamboo mat, transforming it into various shapes like the Torii gate, weeping willow tree, Tokyo tower, a rainbow etc.
The spectacular performance drew cheers from the audience.

The last performer was Mr.Eiraku, he changed the program to "Jugemu" after observing the audience's reaction.
Some participants couldn’t stop laughing at Eiraku's earnest and increasingly exhausted calls of overly long names. Just imagining memorizing those names is enough to make us feel faint...

They all enjoyed the unique Rakugo performances-Ms.Ichirin was gorgeous, Mr.Simon was dynamic and Mr.Eiraku was highly expressive.

After the performance, during the Q&A time there was positive feedback and even requests for Japanese ghost stories.

Rakugo is humorous and it's a wonderful traditional art that allows participants to experience good Japanese culture.
We would like to appreciate Mr.Eiraku, Ms.Ichirin, Mr.Simon and everyone who attended not forgetting those who worked hard to put on this event at the JICA Tokyo Center after a long time!

英楽さんの「寿限無」にみんなで爆笑！

英語落語協会の鹿鳴家英楽さん、一輪さん、彩紋さんがJICA東京で研修員のために落語の公演を行ってくれました！
5月30日の夜、ウガンダ、エジプト、タイ、パキスタン、マラウイ、ベトナムなど10数か国の研修員がJICAに落語を聴きに来てくれました。

英語の落語ってどういうものだろう..?
研修員も初めてだと思うので、英楽さんには最初に落語について、背景や楽しみ方、海外での反応などをお話しいただくようお願いしました。
ストーリーの会話の例を挙げながらテンポよく「落語とは？」について語る英楽さん。
そして英楽さんが、「あっち！」と指を指すと、一斉にそちらの方向を見る皆さん^ ^
しかしその時にすることは、そちらを見ることではありません！と英楽さん。
一人何役もこなす噺家の言葉や表情、身振りから、何が起こっているのかを頭を働かせて推察するのが落語の面白いところ。

落語の楽しみ方がわかったところで、一輪さんの「転失気」が始まる。
これを聴いたら、あなたは「てんしき」とは何か？一生忘れないでしょう、と微笑む一輪さん。確かに、これは忘れられません笑。

続いて彩紋さんの「夏泥」。つい情にかられた泥棒と被害者の立場が逆転する滑稽話。
肝の据わった被害者とオタオタする泥棒の対比が面白く、江戸っ子の情の深さやしたたかさが短いストーリーに詰まっています。

そして「色物」と呼ばれる、一輪さんの「玉すだれ」。
素朴な竹マットが、鳥居やしだれ柳、東京タワーや虹など、幾種もの形に早変わり！
華やかな芸に歓声が上がっていました。

大トリは英楽さんが皆さんの様子を見て演目を変えて「寿限無」を公演。
長すぎる名前を真面目に、次第にヘトヘトになって必死に呼ぶ英楽さんの様子に笑い転げる研修員も。これは覚えることを考えただけで気が遠くなりそう..

華やかな一輪さん、ダイナミックな彩紋さん、深く豊かな表現力の英楽さん、それぞれの個性的な落語がとても素敵でした。
終了後は質問が飛び交い、怪談などほかの話しも聴きたい！という声も。
ウィットに富んだ落語は、良き日本文化に触れることのできる素晴らしい伝統芸能だと思いました。
英楽さん、一輪さん、彩紋さん、そしてご参加いただいた皆さま、そして久しぶりのJICA東京センターでのイベント開催のために走り回ってくれた皆さまに心より感謝申し上げます..!
