Here, you can see an exhibit about the Nippon Maru, which was the last emigrant ship bound for South America. Until the 1970s, emigrants relied on ships for travel overseas. Many ships used to travel to South America from Kobe, Yokohama and other ports, but as air travel became more common, emigration by ship gradually tapered off. Japan’s rapid economic growth in the 1960s also led to progressively fewer people emigrating from Japan. The Nippon Maru became the last emigrant ship to South America. It left Yokohama on February 14, 1973, carrying 285 emigrants.
Here you can listen to interviews with people who traveled on the Nippon Maru.
