The exhibit here is about migrant lodges. In the 1890s, facilities known as “migrant lodges” catering to Japanese hoping to go abroad to live or work began to appear near the ports of Yokohama, Kobe, and Nagasaki. These lodgings were places where they could pass the time as they waited to board their ships to travel abroad. Many of these people came from rural areas and were completely unfamiliar with the procedures needed to leave Japan. The migrant lodges played a crucial role when it came to helping these hopeful emigrants with the ticketing and embarkation procedures needed to leave Japan. Here, you can view a map showing the many migrant lodges that were located around the Port of Yokohama.
