Here you can see a replica of a type of general store known as a “yorozuya.” Wherever Japanese immigrated, they strived to preserve their food culture. To do so, they would establish businesses that produced foods such as miso, soy sauce, tofu, Japanese sweets, and the like. In towns with large Japanese populations, there would be “yorozuya”, stores selling goods imported from Japan. This exhibit features a replica of a yorozuya operated by the Yasui brothers in Hood River, Oregon, in the United States.
