This exhibit shows the history of Japanese overseas migration, divided into five eras, beginning with the Meiji period in 1868 and ending with the post-WWII years. The timeline on the wall will tell you about the major events that occurred in each era. You can find examples of passports, immigrant photos, and other historical documents on display, as well. There are also documents relating to the incarceration of Japanese-Americans in North America during WWII. The war created major challenges to Japanese immigrants in the US.
To the right, you can see displays about the kinds of people who decided to immigrate and why they did so.
