Emergency Assistance in Response to Hurricane “Beryl” disaster in Jamaica

The Japan International Cooperation Agency will provide emergency relief goods as below in response to the Hurricane “Beryl” disaster, upon the request from the Government of Jamaica.

1. Disaster situation
Hurricane “Beryl”, which has caused serious human and property damage on July 3rd. According to JICA JAMAICA OFFICE, the damage situation as of July 11 was as follows:

Injured Unidentified
Affected Approx. 920,000 people
Missing Unidentified
Evacuees More than 1,800 people
Damaged houses Unidentified
Damage to infrastructure
・Roads: At least 115 roads have been blocked by trees and other obstacles.
・Telecommunications: Several companies have experienced telecommunications outages.
・Power outage: 60-65% of households (about 400,000 people)
・Water: 70% of households have lost water
・Damage to medical facilities and public health:
Electricity and water are being restored on a priority basis. The Ministry of Health has issued a notice to encourage prevention of Leptospirosis.
・Damage to agricultural land: Huge damage was reported in St. Elizabeth Province, where bananas, breadfruit, and Jamaica apples were heavily damaged, and damage to the agricultural sector is estimated at over JMD 2 billion.

B. Shipping schedule
The goods will be transported from the JICA warehouse in Miami to Kingston on the next available flight.
