On February 3, JICA President Tanaka Akihiko held talks with President David W. Panuelo of the Federated States of Micronesia, in Tokyo.
At the opening of the meeting, President Tanaka congratulated the Embassy of the Federated States of Micronesia in Japan on the opening of its new office. He also expressed JICA’s appreciation for the high expectations of the agency’s cooperation in the Federated States of Micronesia—in particular, of the activities of the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV)—that the people of the country had demonstrated.
In response, President Panuelo expressed his gratitude for JICA's cooperation in the Federated States of Micronesia. He said that he was pleased to see the resumption of cross-border travel, including that of engineers, which had been interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, he acknowledged the importance of all forms of cooperation, including People-to-People Exchanges.
The two sides also exchanged views on the need to resume projects that had been suspended due to COVID-19 and to consider how best to realize value-added cooperation in preparation for the 10th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM 10), to be held in 2024.
