On March 2, JICA President Tanaka Akihiko met with Mr. Peter Sands, Executive Director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (“Global Fund”, see note), at JICA Headquarters.

At the opening of the meeting, President Tanaka expressed his admiration and appreciation for the efforts of the Global Fund towards measures against the three major infectious diseases (AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria), and then shared his hopes for further collaboration with JICA.

In response, Mr. Sands expressed gratitude for the various forms of collaboration and strong partnership built between JICA through its technical cooperation, and also shared his intention to further deepen cooperation in the future—including financial cooperation —towards the achievement of the SDGs amidst current multiple, inter-linked challenges confronting the world.

The two leaders shared their thoughts on the possibility of specific collaboration in the future through technical and financial cooperation, confirming their intention to continue working closely together.

Note: The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria was founded in 2002 as a public-private partnership to support infectious disease control for the three major infectious diseases. At the G8 Kyushu-Okinawa Summit in 2000, Japan raised infectious disease control as an important agenda for the first time in G7/8 Summit history, and it paved the path to the Fund’s establishment.
