President Tanaka Met with Executive Director Satkuru of the International Tropical Timber Organization

On May 27, JICA President Tanaka Akihiko met with Executive Director of the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) Sheam Satkuru at JICA Headquarters.

At the opening of the meeting, Executive Director Satkuru expressed gratitude for the wide-ranging cooperation between JICA and ITTO, including more than ten years of implementing various projects and co-hosting events at international conferences under an agreement on operational cooperation with JICA.

In response, President Tanaka conveyed the hope to further deepen the partnership between ITTO and JICA and to strengthen cooperation and communication at various international conferences ahead of important events such as the 16th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP16) and the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) later this year, as well as the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) in Yokohama and the 30th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30) scheduled to be held next year.

Additionally, both parties exchanged views on the importance of considering indigenous peoples and gender issues in promoting the conservation and sustainable use of tropical forests, as well as preparations for co-hosting a side event at the upcoming TICAD 9.
