JICA President Tanaka Met with AUDA-NEPAD CEO Bekele-Thomas

On October 2, JICA President Tanaka Akihiko met with CEO of the African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD) Nardos Bekele-Thomas at JICA Headquarters.
Meeting with AUDA-NEPAD Delegation
At the beginning of the meeting, President Tanaka expressed appreciation for AUDA-NEPAD’s collaboration in expanding JICA’s cooperation across the African continent, and highlighted hopes to strengthen this partnership in line with the African Union’s development plan, Agenda 2063 to promote effective cooperation benefiting the entire continent.

In response, CEO of AUDA-NEPAD Bekele-Thomas expressed gratitude for the opportunity to visit Japan, including her visit to Yokohama, the host city for the upcoming TICAD9, and for a meeting with representatives of ASEAN development cooperation departments and agencies. She emphasized hopes to see ASEAN countries share development experiences, gained through JICA’s cooperation, with African nations during events such as TICAD9.
Signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation
Following discussions, both parties signed a one-year extension to the Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) first agreed in 2021, which focused on five priority areas of cooperation, including kaizen, food and nutrition, and regional integration. CEO Bekele-Thomas shared hopes to further expand these areas at TICAD9 in 2025.
