On March 12, JICA President Tanaka Akihiko met with H.E. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, Chair of the Board of Directors of the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) and former President of the United Republic of Tanzania, at JICA headquarters in Tokyo. GPE is the world’s largest trust fund supporting education in developing countries.

President Tanaka expressed his pleasure at the reunion ever since H.E. Kikwete’s presidency, and conveyed his gratitude for H.E. Kikwete’s leadership and cooperation with JICA during his tenure. President Tanaka also introduced JICA's initiatives in the field of basic education, noting that JICA was accredited as Grant Agent for GPE in December 2024. He also expressed his aspiration to further deepen cooperation with GPE.

In response, H.E. Kikwete, Chair of the Board of Directors, congratulated JICA on the GPE Grant Agent accreditation and expressed his expectations for further strengthening the collaboration between GPE and JICA.

Both parties further agreed to cooperate towards the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development, which will be held in August this year.

Note: Grant Agent is an organization that manages and executes GPE funds. Serving as a bridge between education ministries of partner countries and GPE, Grant Agent provides technical and administrative support for those ministries seeking GPE funding to promote educational reform.
