2025.06.10

On June 3, JICA Executive Senior Vice President Miyazaki Katsura met President of the Republic of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, in the capital city of Accra.

At the outset, Executive Senior Vice President Miyazaki congratulated President Mahama on his inauguration, highlighting his past work at the Embassy of Japan in Ghana. She expressed her hope for visits to Japan by the President and high-level officials of Ghana, since this year is particularly special with TICAD9 (the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development) scheduled for this August in Yokohama and the World Expo 2025 currently held in Osaka, Kansai, Japan.

In response, President Mahama expressed his gratitude for JICA’s long-standing support and unwavering cooperation, and his deep appreciation for the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepen cooperation, taking the momentum that 2027 marks the 50th anniversary of the dispatch of Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers, the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations and the 100th anniversary of Hideyo Noguchi's visit to Ghana.

Furthermore, referring to the Grant Agreement for the Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship, which both parties had signed earlier that day, Executive Senior Vice President Miyazaki expressed her expectation that the Project, by providing scholarships to young administrative officers from Ghana to pursue graduate degrees in Japanese universities, would foster the development of human resources who not only possess the expertise to play active roles but also well-versed in Japanese society and culture.
