On June 18, JICA President Tanaka Akihiko met with Prime Minister Maria Benvinda Delfina Levi of the Republic of Mozambique at JICA headquarters in Tokyo.

At the outset, President Tanaka highlighted Mozambique's crucial role in connecting Africa, the Indo-Pacific, and Japan through the Nacala Corridor, thereby contributing to the realization of a "Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)." He also expressed his expectations for the Nacala Port, developed in cooperation with JICA.

In response, Prime Minister Levi conveyed gratitude for JICA's cooperation in various fields such as education, vocational training, agriculture, and healthcare. She highlighted the participation of many Japanese stakeholders at the business forum held on Mozambique National Day at Expo 2025 in Osaka on June 16, and expressed her hope to further strengthen relations with Japan through TICAD9 this August.

President Tanaka also mentioned the visit of northern Mozambican governors to Ehime prefecture, the dispatch of 384 Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers in total to Mozambique, and the invitation of 150 Mozambican students to Japan through the ABE Initiative (African Business Education Initiative for Youth). He emphasized that people-to-people exchanges serve as a bridge between the two countries, a view affirmed by Prime Minister Levi.
