On April 28, JICA Executive Senior Vice President Miyazaki Katsura met with Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic in Vientiane, the country’s capital.
At the outset, Executive Senior Vice President Miyazaki noted that bilateral relations between Japan and Laos have been further strengthened through various commemorative events held last year to mark both the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries and the 60th anniversary of the dispatch of JICA Overseas Cooperation Volunteers. She conveyed JICA’s intention to continue its cooperation while placing importance on continuity, and to further expand collaboration across a wide range of sectors.
In response, Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone expressed his appreciation for Japan’s and JICA’s longstanding support to Laos. He also conveyed his expectations for JICA’s continued cooperation toward Laos’ graduation from Least Developed Country (LDC) status and the achievement of self-reliant and high-quality economic growth.
Both sides also exchanged views on the importance of sustaining cooperation amid an increasingly uncertain international environment.
