JICA President Tanaka Met with IFAD President Lario
2026.05.28
On May 21, JICA President Tanaka Akihiko met with President Alvaro Lario of International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) at JICA Headquarters in Tokyo.
At the outset, President Tanaka expressed his gratitude for IFAD’s cooperation and collaboration to date. In particular, he noted that the scope of cooperation and collaboration between the two organizations has expanded into broader regions and categories since his November 2022 meeting with President Lario, and he once again conveyed his gratitude to IFAD.
In response, President Lario mentioned a strong collaborative relationship maintained between IFAD and JICA toward promoting the so-called “SHEP One Million Declaration,” which aims to increase the number of beneficiaries of the SHEP (Smallholder Horticulture Empowerment & Promotion) initiative to one million. He also emphasized the importance of partnership between the two organizations.
Both parties further exchanged views on agricultural and rural development —including initiatives primarily promoted by JICA such as SHEP and CARD (the Coalition for African Rice Development)—, private sector development, and co-financing.
