2023.06.21

On June 19 in Asuncion, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Record of Discussions (R/D) with Agencia Espacial del Paraguay (AEP), the Government of Paraguay’s Space Agency, on the “Project for Management of Space Programs Applied to Socioeconomic Development,” JICA's first technical cooperation project with a space agency in Latin America. The signing ceremony was witnessed by Substitute Minister, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Raúl Silvero Silvagni and JICA President Tanaka Akihiko.

The AEP aims to utilize space-related technologies for the country's social and economic development, while achieving a safe life for its citizens. The project, with the cooperation of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), will strengthen the AEP’s capacity to utilize space-related technologies and to carry out research and development, and will also experiment with the use of satellite data to solve problems in important areas in Paraguay.

Through such efforts, this project will promote decision-making based on geospatial information, mainly using space-related technologies, and will strengthen Paraguay's capacity in the fields of disaster management and agro-pastoralism. In doing so, it will contribute to the achievement of SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) Goals 9 (Industry, innovation and infrastructure), 13 (Climate action), and 15 (Life on land).
