On July 7, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) on collaboration and cooperation with the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (ROAP), at the office’s Fukuoka headquarters. The signatories were Mr. Bruno Dercon, Regional Representative (Acting) for Asia and the Pacific, ROAP, and Mr. Tanaka Hiroo, Director General, Infrastructure Management Department of JICA. The signing took place in the presence of Ms. Maimunah Mohd Sharif, Executive Director of UN-Habitat, and Mr. Onodera Seiichi, Senior Vice President of JICA, at JICA Shikoku in Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture, on the occasion of the G7 Sustainable Urban Development Ministers' Meeting.

The aim of the LOI is to address urban and rural development by strengthening the cohesion between UN-Habitat and JICA’s 2020-2025 Strategic Plan and the efforts of the JICA Global Agenda. In doing so, it will contribute to the achievement of SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) Goals 6 (Clean water and sanitation), 9 (Industry, innovation and infrastructure), 11 (Sustainable cities and communications), and 13 (Climate action).

Based on the LOI, UN-Habitat and JICA will promote initiatives toward achieving the SDGs by utilizing each other's knowledge and experience, human resources, and networks, while further deepening their collaborative relationship and respecting the business strategies of each organization.

MAIN CONTENTS:
1. Consultations in the field of urban development and management at the staff and/or managerial level.
2. Exchange of information on innovative approaches to projects, needs, and challenges.
3. Sharing of technical knowledge and experience through collaborative study sessions.
4. Exchange of mid-career personnel between the two institutions.
5. Coordination of technical cooperation projects carried out by both institutions in the same recipient countries.
