On August 31, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Record of Discussions with the Government of the Arab Republic of Egypt for the Project for Economic Development of Aquaculture Sector and Fish Supply Chain in Egypt, a technical cooperation project.

In Egypt, more than 85% of water resources are dependent upon the Nile River and, with future growth expected for the population, efficiency of water utilization is an urgent issue. However, when it comes to irrigation water, agriculture is prioritized, and inland aquaculture is effectively left with only agricultural waste water. This influences the quality of farmed fish, which are affected by harmful ingredients such as pesticide residue. Thus, in Egypt, which is home to the most active aquaculture industry in Africa, it is imperative to promote the industry in inland areas by disseminating aquaculture that both uses water in advance of other industries and also saves it. Moreover, it is important to ensure that wastewater does not adversely affect agriculture production in secondary-use areas.
