Signing of Grant Agreement with Honduras: Contributing to a decreased vulnerability to natural disasters by building a bridge on National Road No. 6
2024.01.17
On January 11, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a grant agreement with the Government of the Republic of Honduras in the capital city of Tegucigalpa, to provide grant aid of up to 2,863 million yen for The Project for Construction of the Bridge on the National Road No. 6.
National Road No. 6 is one of two main roads that support the transport and distribution of goods between Tegucigalpa and the neighboring country Nicaragua. The volume of traffic along this road is expected to increase, while the risk of road closures and wide-scale detours due to landslides and other natural disasters remain high, as the route traverses a mountainous region.

In particular, deformations have been detected since 2016 at the 16.3 km point. If this damage intensifies, not only will it likely lead to a tragic accident, but it will also paralyze the metropolitan logistics network, potentially prompting substantial economic losses.
This project will entail asphalt overlay and bridge construction at the landslide-prone point of National Road No. 6—a major thoroughfare in Honduras. This will decrease the country’s vulnerability to natural disasters and enable safer and more effective maintenance of its logistics network, leading to more stable and flourished economic activity.
The project will thereby contribute to the achievement of SDGs Goals 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) and 11 (Sustainable cities and communities).
