Signing of Grant Agreement with Viet Nam: Contributing to the strengthening of core functions at the country’s largest cancer hospital through improving medical equipment

2024.05.29
On May 28, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a grant agreement with the Government of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam in Hanoi to provide grant aid of up to 1,830 million yen for the Project for the Improvement of Medical Equipment at National Cancer Hospital.
In Viet Nam, the leading cause of death has shifted from infectious diseases to non-communicable diseases (NCDs) as lifestyles change in line with economic growth. Approximately 80% of all deaths in 2020 were due to NCDs, increasing year by year, and cancer incidence in Viet Nam has tripled over the past 30 years (Ministry of Health statistics).
Signing ceremony
The project involves the provision of medical equipment for the National Cancer Hospital, the largest cancer-specialized hospital in Viet Nam, which annually admits approximately 80,000 inpatients and over 300,000 outpatients, as well as performs around 25,000 surgeries. The project will thereby contribute to the development of a resilient healthcare system in Viet Nam through enhanced cancer diagnosis and prevention systems, in addition to contributing to SDGs Goal 3 (Good health and well-being).
