Celebrating the 60th Anniversary of JICA’s Volunteer Program

2025.02.14

2025 marks the 60th anniversary of JICA’s Volunteer Program, which began in 1965 with the dispatch of 29 Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers to five countries: Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Kenya.

Over the past six decades, JICA volunteers have contributed their expertise and experience toward supporting people in developing countries across more than nine fields and 190 professions, including agriculture, forestry and fisheries, health and medicine, social welfare, commerce, and tourism. To date, a total 57,000 volunteers have been dispatched to 99 countries.

Many returning JICA volunteers continue to leverage their experiences from the program, working to address social challenges not only in developing countries but also in Japan.

To commemorate this milestone, JICA has launched a yearlong anniversary project under the theme “The Power of JICA VolunteersChange the World, Change Japan.” As a symbol of this effort, JICA has also created a 60th-anniversary logo and established a dedicated website.

Through a variety of 60th-anniversary initiatives, JICA will share the stories of JICA volunteers and their contributions toward bringing about change in Japan and the world.
