JICA President Tanaka Visited Moldova

From May 26 to 28, JICA President Tanaka Akihiko visited the Republic of Moldova, where he met with President Maia Sandu and other key government officials. He also visited JICA project sites in the country.

During his meeting with President Sandu, President Tanaka reaffirmed JICA’s continued commitment to working together for sustainable economic growth and enhancing living standards in Moldova, as well as assisting reforms for building a resilient society and economy in the country. President Sandu expressed her gratitude for JICA’s long-term cooperation in areas like healthcare and agriculture, while discussing Moldova’s development priorities.

President Tanaka also met with Prime Minister Dorin Recean, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popşoi, Minister of Finance Victoria Belous, and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization Doina Nistor. During these meetings, President Tanaka discussed JICA’s initiatives in Moldova and shared views on social and economic reform, the importance of fair and free journalism, and other relevant areas.

Meeting with Prime Minister Recean

While in the country, President Tanaka also made a visit to the Mother and Child Institute to observe the equipment supplied in February 2025 as part of Japanese grant aid for the “Programme for Strengthening the Medical System”. During his visit, he met with Minister of Health Ala Nemerenco and outlined JICA’s initiatives in Moldova’s health sector. He expressed his support for the ongoing health sector reforms promoted by the Minister and hoped that the provided equipment would continue to be used effectively in the country.

Visit to the Mother and Child Institute

President Tanaka also visited the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations of the Ministry of Internal Affairs to observe a demonstration training that utilized fire trucks and other equipment provided through Japanese grant aid for the “Project for the Improvement of Fire Fighting Equipment”. He reaffirmed that the provided equipment has contributed to enhancing firefighting and rescue capabilities. Emphasizing the importance of human resource development in firefighting, President Tanaka and the Minister of Internal Affairs Misail-Nichitin commended firefighters for their dedication to daily training.

JICA will continue to implement a wide range of cooperation projects contributing to the development of Moldova's economic and social foundations.
