Memorial Ceremony Held in Bangladesh to Remember Japanese Citizens Who Lost Their Lives in the 2016 Dhaka Terrorist Attack

On July 2, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), together with the Governments of Japan and the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, held a memorial ceremony in Dhaka to remember the seven Japanese citizens who tragically lost their lives in the July 2016 terrorist attack in the city while working on the preparatory study for the Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit Development Project.

The ceremony was held in front of the memorial monument located within the depot of Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Line 6. Government officials from both countries participated, including H.E. Mr. Ishizuki Hideo, Director-General of the International Cooperation Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan; H.E. Mr. Saida Shinichi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the People’s Republic of Bangladesh; Dr. Mohammed Ziaul Haque, Additional Secretary, Road Transport and Highways Division, Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges; Mr. Mohammad Hasan Arif, Additional Secretary, Economic Relations Division, Ministry of Finance of Bangladesh; Mr. Mohammed Nore-Alam, Director General (East Asia and Pacific Wing), Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh; and Mr. Faruque Ahmed, Managing Director, Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited. Members of the bereaved families were also in attendance. Marking nine years since the tragic terrorist attack in Dhaka, the participants expressed deep condolences for the victims and reaffirmed their pledge to safety and peace.

Miyazaki Katsura, JICA Executive Senior Vice President, attended the ceremony as one of the organizers and conveyed heartfelt gratitude in her speech for invaluable contributions the seven individuals made to the development of Bangladesh. She also underscored JICA’s unwavering commitment to never forgetting their legacy and taking all possible measures to ensure the safety of future projects.
