On August 18, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a grant agreement with the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) in New York, USA, to provide a grant aid for the Project for the Improvement of Working Environment for Mine Action Agencies. The signatures were exchanged between Deputy Director of UNMAS Rita Gunaryati Lubis and Chief Representative of JICA USA Office Tanaka Satoko. The Project is JICA's first initiative with UNMAS after the Memorandum of Cooperation signed between JICA and UNMAS this June.

The Project for the Improvement of Working Environment for Mine Action Agencies

The Republic of South Sudan (Western Equatoria, Central Equatoria, Eastern Equatoria, Jonglei, Lakes, Unity, Upper Nile, Warrap, and Western Bahr El Ghazal)

- Project Objective
To enhance South Sudan’s sustainable mine action capabilities, by providing equipment necessary for preliminary surveys prior to mine and explosive ordnance clearance, and capacity building of the National Mine Action Authority (NMAA), thereby contributing to the development of economic and social infrastructure through the promotion of mine action.
