Signing of Japanese ODA Loan Agreement with Angola: Contributing to the enhancement of power grid in the southern region through the construction of transmission lines and other infrastructure

On August 21, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a loan agreement with the Government of the Republic of Angola in Yokohama city, to provide Japanese ODA loan for the Project for Transmission System Reinforcement in Southern Region. The signatures were exchanged between Angola’s Minister of Finance Vera Esperança dos Santos Daves and JICA President Tanaka Akihiko.

The project outline is explained below.

Project for Transmission System Reinforcement in Southern Region

- Project Objective
This project aims to increase transmission capacity and stabilize power supply in southern Angola by constructing new transmission lines and substations, as well as improving the distribution network. This will help enhance the living environment of local residents and promote the revitalization of industrial activities.

- Project Component
i) Construction of 220 kV transmission line between Nombungo and Namibe substations through East Lubango substation
ii) Construction of 220/60kV East Lubango and Namibe substations
iii) Development of 60 kV distribution line
a. Construction of 60 kV distribution line between East Lubango and Arimba substations
b. Construction of 60/15kV Arimba substation
iv) Procurement of demining equipment used to clear mines and UXOs along the transmission/distribution lines and at the substations

JICA is co-financing this project with AfDB. This project will be implemented as a parallel co-financing initiative under the Accelerated Co-Financing Facility for Africa (ACFA), based on the Enhanced Private Sector Assistance for Africa (EPSA), a joint initiative for the development of the private sector in Africa.
