Signing of Loan Agreement for Project for Food Access Improvement and Employment Promotion in Central America (Private Sector Investment Finance)

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a loan agreement on December 26, 2024, with a family-owned Guatemala-based food corporation CMI Alimentos Global S.L., part of Corporación Multi Inversiones (hereinafter referred to as “CMI”), and its group companies. A commemorative ceremony has taken place on November 20, 2025, followed by the disbursement on November 21. This timing coincides with the 2025 Japan-Central America Friendship Year, which celebrates the 90th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and five Central American Countries, and the Project will contribute to further strengthening such relations.
The loan is co-financed with Inter-American Investment Corporation (IDB-Invest) and Société de Promotion et de Participation pour la Coopération Economique S.A (Proparco), and the fund of this project will be used for the expansion of production facilities and improvement of environmental performance of the CMI groups in Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Honduras.

- Project Purpose
Through a long-term loan to CMI group companies, this project will support the expansion and decarbonization of food processing factories and feed manufacturing plants, the product diversification and waste management efficiency in meat processing plants, and the expansion of small restaurant chains, thereby contributing to the countries' food access and the creation of employment in Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Honduras.

The JICA loan will be utilized by the borrowers to strengthen production facilities and sales networks, to invest in equipment for improving production efficiency and environmental performance, and as working capital for business expansion.
