Signing of Grant Agreement with Laos: Contributing to strengthening regional healthcare systems through improvement of referral hospital in Southern region

On January 9, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a grant agreement with the Government of Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) in the capital city Vientiane, to provide grant aid for the Project for the Improvement of the Referral Hospital in the Southern Region. The signatures were exchanged between Director General Vongkhamheng Vongthachack, Department of International Finance and Cooperation, Ministry of Finance, Lao PDR and Chief Representative Kobayashi Miyako of JICA Laos.

The Project aims to improve medical facilities and equipment at Champasak Provincial Hospital, which serves as the regional referral hospital for the southern region of Lao PDR. By constructing a new central clinical building equipped with emergency and surgical departments and an Intensive Care Unit, the project will strengthen the diagnosis and treatment system, thereby contributing to the improvement of healthcare and medical services in the four southern provinces toward the achievement of Universal Health Coverage and Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good health and well-being).
Furthermore, the project is expected to contribute to further strengthening the long-standing friendly and cooperative relationship between Japan and Lao PDR.

The objective of the Project is to strengthen the diagnostic and treatment system of Champasak Provincial Hospital, which serves as the regional core hospital of four provinces in southern Lao PDR (Champasak, Attapeu, Salavan and Sekong), and to improve referral system in the region by upgrading the facilities and equipment necessary to provide effective and efficient medical services to critically ill patients, thereby contributing to strengthening of the health and medical services in Lao PDR through strengthening of the regional medical system in the four provinces.
