On January 8, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Record of Discussions with the Government of Mongolia in the capital city Ulaanbaatar, for the “Project for Development of Digital Network Platform for Integrated Modelling to Assess Grassland and Gobi Desert Ecosystem Resilience against Climate Change and Human Activities” under the Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS) program.

The signatures were exchanged among Director Batbold Munkhtur of Science & Technology Policy and Planning Department of Ministry of Economy and Development, President Sodnomsambuu Demberel of Mongolian Academy of Sciences, and Senior Representative Tokuji Yoshimura of JICA Mongolia Office.

This Project is a joint research initiative between Yamaguchi University and the Institute of Mathematics and Digital Technology of Mongolian Academy of Sciences. It focuses on developing sensing technologies through the integration of satellite data and on-site data on the grasslands in Mongolia, which are undergoing desertification. Additionally, it aims to develop methods and mechanisms to evaluate the resilience of ecosystems against the impacts of human activities and climate change, for the purpose of monitoring grassland-centered ecosystems.
