On February 26, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a grant agreement with the Government of the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire in Abidjan, to provide grant aid for the Project for the Improvement of Road Maintenance Equipment in Greater Abidjan. The Greater Abidjan (a metropolitan region with a population of approximately six million, including the city of Abidjan and surrounding areas) is not only the largest commercial urban area in the country but also a key hub for transit cargo destined for neighboring landlocked countries. The region faces challenges in developing and maintaining road infrastructure to cope with rapid population growth and increasing transport demand. Japan has supported the country’s transport infrastructure development starting with assistance for the formulation of the Urban Master Plan in Greater Abidjan.
This project aims to help the country independently carry out road maintenance. Through this support, improvements in road conditions and transportation convenience are expected, which will in turn facilitate smoother transportation and logistics within the region and to neighboring countries. Furthermore, enhanced road conditions and transport convenience will encourage the entry of Japanese companies, while the use of Japanese equipment is expected to increase recognition of Japan’s technology and products, contributing to strengthening Japan’s presence in the region.
