On May 21, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed the Record of Discussions on the framework for implementing the technical cooperation project titled “Project for Landscape Restoration and Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation in Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use”, with Ministry of Environment, Protection of Nature and Sustainable Development (MINEPDED) and Ministry of Economy, Planning and Regional Development (MINEPAT) of the Republic of Cameroon in the capital city Yaounde. The signatures were exchanged between Minister Pierre Hele of MINEPDED, Minister Alamine Ousmane Mey of MINEPAT and Chief Representative Masakatsu Okumoto of JICA Cameroon Office.
As part of the Congo Basin -often referred to as one of the “lungs of the Earth” alongside the Amazon- Cameroon is facing severe deforestation and land degradation, which are progressing year by year due to agricultural expansion. The project aims to strengthen the capacity of communities and public sector officials in sustainable forest management through the implementation of agroforestry activities to restore degraded savanna and forest landscapes and promoting zero-deforestation cocoa production in Central and Northern Regions.
