JICA President Tanaka Visited Peru

From September 7 to 12, JICA President Tanaka Akihiko visited the Republic of Peru. During his visit, he met with the President of Peru and other key government officials, participated in commemorative ceremonies and lectures, and visited some JICA project sites as well as the Japanese Peruvian Association (APJ). The visit underscored the strong ties between Peru and Japan, while reaffirming the achievements of JICA’s cooperation to date, identifying areas for further cooperation, and highlighting Peru’s expectations for Japan and JICA.
During his stay in Peru, President Tanaka held meetings with the country’s President Keiko Fujimori and other senior government officials. Discussions focused on the longstanding partnership between JICA and Peru, the country’s development challenges, and measures to address them. Both sides reaffirmed the importance to both countries of cooperation for Peru’s sustainable development and confirmed their commitment to further deepening the partnership through continued dialogue.

In the State of Amazonas, President Tanaka visited JICA project sites and exchanged views with local community representatives and other stakeholders. Through these exchanges, he confirmed specific examples of how JICA’s multifaceted cooperation has contributed to community-led sustainable tourism development in the region. JICA’s initiatives have included financing for tourism infrastructure, technical cooperation incorporating Japan’s eco-museum concept (a “museum without walls”) and public lectures at local universities to share Japan’s experiences.

President Tanaka also participated in the 150th anniversary celebration of the National University of Engineering (UNI) of Peru. In his address, he reflected on the history and achievements of the Peruvian-Japanese Center for Seismic Research and Disaster Mitigation (CISMID), established with Japan’s cooperation, and emphasized the importance of cooperation for disaster risk reduction in safeguarding human security from the direct threats posed by natural disasters. Looking ahead, he highlighted opportunities for further collaboration in the fields of disaster risk reduction, science, and technology, while expressing his hope for the next generation of professionals to drive technological innovation and strengthen international cooperation.
At the Japanese Peruvian Association (APJ), President Tanaka met with the Association’s President to exchange views. He expressed his respect for the Association’s longstanding contributions to the development of the Nikkei (people of Japanese descent) community and the strengthening Peru-Japan relations, while conveying his gratitude for its continued cooperation with JICA projects over the years. The two sides also reaffirmed their commitment to further enhancing collaboration in support of the Nikkei community and on joint initiatives, such as training programs.
