10th JICA-World Bank Group High-Level Dialogue: Discussions on Global Health, Private Sector Finance

Since 2014, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the World Bank Group have held an annual high-level dialogue called “Deep Dive” to promote collaboration between headquarters and the field level through dialogue on priority themes.

On September 18, 2024, during a visit to the U.S., President Tanaka met with World Bank Group President Banga as a 10th Deep Dive, and exchanged views based on the outcomes on the two particularly important issues, i.e. “Global Health” and “Private Sector Finance”, under the ongoing compound crisis. The outcomes of the discussions over the past six months, led by World Bank Vice Presidents and JICA Senior Vice Presidents, were confirmed as follows.

In the area of global health, the two institutions agreed to collaborate by leveraging the strengths of both institutions to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and the Bank's goal of providing quality healthcare services to 1.5 billion people by 2030. Specifically, the two institutions will strengthen their collaboration by increasing the impact of co-financing combined with technical cooperation, co-creating knowledge, and jointly advocating at high-level forums and other events.

In the area of private sector finance, JICA and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) of the World Bank Group confirmed that 85% of their co-financing target (totaling US$1.5 billion for both organizations) defined under the Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) signed in 2022 has already been achieved. The two agreed to continue to work together effectively towards achieving the co-financing target.

President Tanaka and President Banga also discussed to strengthen support to Africa including food security and support for the Pacific Island Countries.

Both institutions will continue their dialogue at various levels and work to increase development impact through enhanced collaboration.
