At the opening of the side event,Hon. Cedric Schuster, Minister of Environment of Samoa, welcomed the contributions of JICA, SPREP, and the Pacific Climate Change Centre (PCCC) towards building resilience in the region, emphasizing the importance of promoting innovation and public-private partnerships in advancing climate action.
Mr. Kazunao Shibata, Deputy Director-General of JICA's Global Environment Department, stated that the "Project for Innovative Solutions for Pacific Climate Change Resilience" aims to strengthen the innovation function of the PCCC, promote innovative climate change measures, and foster public-private partnerships, contributing to a more sustainable and resileint Pacific.
Mr. Sefanaia Nawadra, Director General of SPREP, acknowledged the cooperation of the Samoan Government and JICA on this project and highlighted the importance of partnerships to promote resilience in the communities of the Pacific region.
Mr.Yoshiro Mizuno, the project leader, presented the achievements of the project. The project has stock take of fit-for purpose innovative climate change approaches and solutions available in the Pacific region and globally, identifying 156 measures. Additionally, training on basic of climate change and its impacts, and innovative climate change solutions applicable to the Pacific region has been conducted, with 44 participants completing the training.
During the panel discussion,Ms.Irene Olkeriil, a graduate of the aforementioned training, highlighted the need for capacity building in project management and finance literacy to promote public-private partnerships in the Pacific region.
Hon. Tiofilusi Tiueti, Minister of Finance of the Kingdom of Tonga, emphasized the importance of regional mechanisms like the PCCC for the Pacific region to implement climate change measures. He noted that PCCC plays an important role in enhancing capacity, promoting innovation and creating an enabling environment for Pacific Small Island Developing States to respond to the impacts of climate change.
