Primary objectives and outcomes

HSR, the world's largest conference specialized in health policy and systems research (HPSR), is organized by the Health Systems Global every two years in cooperation with local organizers. More than 1,500 researchers and practitioners from around the world are participating in in-depth discussions. The main themes are achieving universal health coverage (UHC) through strengthening health systems and strengthening the global health architecture for pandemic prevention, preparedness and response (PPR), and include both academic and practical perspectives.Being hosted in Nagasaki, HSR2024 also highlights the challenge of climate change and health through the lens of planetary health. It is an opportunity to demonstrate Japan’s leadership role in global health, by providing a platform for HPSR exchange and promotion in the world, especially in the Asia-Pacific region.

Content of the discussions

The 8th Global Symposium on Health Systems Research 2024 (HSR2024), which was held in Japan for the first time, was attended by over 1,500 researchers and practitioners from 113 countries and regions around the world. This year's theme was "Building just and sustainable health systems: centering people and protecting the planet", and discussions were held from the following four perspectives.

JICA organized 8 satellite sessions, where the counterparts from African and Asian countries and JICA staff members presented JICA's on-the-ground efforts on health systems strengthening. JICA made contributions to the symposium through various sessions, mini-events, and exhibition booths. JICA Senior Vice President Sachiko Imoto showed JICA's strong commitmeent to build just and sustainable health systems through her speech at the closing ceremony.

JICA continues to implement cooperation projects on the ground to advance global health, deepen discussions with experts in health policy and sysmtems reserach around the globe, and make efforts to effectively utilize the networks and insights gained in the process.
