Primary objectives and outcomes

In the opening remarks, Masayuki Yokota, Regional Director for Southern Africa at UN-HABITAT, and Hiroe Ohno, Director of JICA Yokohama, emphasized the importance of collaboration with private companies in solving waste management issues in Africa.
In the first part, Kazunao Shibata, Deputy Director of JICA's Global Environment Department, explained the current state of waste management in Africa and ACCP's activities. Representatives from Egypt, Kenya, Ghana, and South Africa presented on legal frameworks and current challenges in waste management, discussing the potential for Japanese companies to enter the market.
The second part introduced JICA's Clean City Initiative and private sector collaboration. Four Japanese companies shared their efforts in local business development and problem-solving. A panel discussion followed, where African representatives expressed expectations for waste management solutions and job creation. The discussion highlighted the importance of local human resource development to leverage the strengths of Japanese companies.
In the closing remarks, Akihiro Ito, Director of JICA's Global Environment Department, expressed hope for a sustainable future through strengthened ties between African countries and Japan. He affirmed JICA's commitment to continue working closely with African nations. The networking session after the seminar facilitated active exchanges, with African participants expressing interest in visiting Japanese company facilities, further deepening the collaboration.
