Primary objectives and outcomes

Ministry of Forestry, Indonesia establishes World Mangrove Center (WMC) to promote sharing its experience on mangrove conservation and rehabilitation and global collaboration of mangrove ecosystem management, WMC, as a center not only for mangrove research and conservation, but also for sharing good practice and global cooperation, aims to globally accelerate to address climate change and other environmental agenda. The purpose of this session is to disseminate the development of WMC and gather global support to WMC as an Indonesian initiative, and strengthen the regional cooperation in sustainable mangrove management.

Content of the discussions

・Vice minister declared, as a keynote speech, to establish WMC and committed Indonesia, which has the largest mangrove extend, to lead global mangrove conservation and rehabilitation.
・Director of Mangrove Rehabilitation emphasized the importance of mangrove ecosystems in addressing climate change and livelihood enhancement of coastal communities and introduces current status, conservation and rehabilitation of mangroves in Indonesia. He also introduced the purpose and function of WMC that share the knowledge and experience and promote global cooperation for mangrove conservation and rehabilitation by Indonesia and global community.
・Mr. Randeni, Director of Secretariat of Climate Change, expected WMC, as global hub on mangrove conservation, rehabilitation and researches, to contribute to achieve the goals of UNFCCC and resolution of UNEA.
・Mr. Munier, GGGI, commented the necessity of the development of funding mechanism and scaling up of actions at local level in order that WMC functions as global hub for mangrove conservation and rehabilitation.
・Dr. Sakaguchi, JICA, introduced a long history of the cooperation between Indonesia and JICA for mangrove conservation, especially emphasizing the establishment and support of the activities of Mangrove Information Center (MIC) in Bali. He also proposed to promote international capacity building and knowledge shaing on mangrove conservation, rehabilitation and sustainable management, utilizing MIC and its surrounding facilities as WMC.
・He also emphasized the importance of sustainable management of mangroves, enhancing the livelihoods of coastal communities, and their participation in the rehabilitation and management of mangroves.
・The audience filling the seats of the venue recognized the establishment of WMC by vice minister's commitment. Since only JICA delivered a PPT presentation on the concrete support and cooperation for WMC, JICA could appeal the coopertion to WMC thourgh the past and new technical cooperation project for supporting WMC.
