The side event aims to share experiences gained from post-earthquake environmental infrastructure projects led by ILBANK and supported financially and technically by international organizations such as the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB).
The event address the technical solutions implemented in projects related to water supply, wastewater treatment, rainwater management, and solid waste management, as well as climate resilience criteria, innovative engineering applications, and green financing tools. Furthermore, the connection between these projects and climate action, sustainable cities, and inclusive development is highlighted.
JICA explained that, based on its Global Agendas of climate change and disaster risk reduction, it is promoting Build Back Better initiatives for environmental infrastructure and pre-disaster investment as co-benefit climate change measures in various countries, including Turkey. Furthermore, given that the impacts of climate change are expected to persist over a long period in the future, JICA emphasized the importance of developing climate-resilient infrastructure while also referring to the concept of "high-quality infrastructure investment."
EBRD introduced that most of its support is directed toward the private sector and that it is focusing on recovery assistance for SMEs in collaboration with ILBANK. In doing so, EBRD considers not only what is needed now but also what will be required in the future, and is working on the development of resilient infrastructure such as hospitals and water facilities that can withstand disasters like floods.
IsDB explained that it provides interest-free loans to support infrastructure restoration for local governments in Turkey. It stressed that compliance with IsDB's safeguards and procurement guidelines is essential when providing assistance, and therefore, technical cooperation aimed at strengthening the capacity of supported municipalities is also important and will be implemented alongside financial support.
