In recent years, forest fires have gained international attention as a serious environmental and economic issue due to their impact on ecosystems, climate change, and biodiversity. In Indonesia, fires occur annually, especially during the dry season, and most are caused by human activities. This event focuses on capacity building—one of the key pillars of FAO’s Global Fire Management Hub—and explores the efforts of Manggala Agni to reduce GHG emissions and promote international cooperation toward achieving the FOLU Net Sink 2030 target.
・This event was planned at the initiative of Dr. Israr Alba, Deputy Director of the Directorate for Forest Fire Management of Ministry of Forestry. His intention was likely to contribute Manggala Agni's capacity-building achievements to the Global Fire Management Hub, a network hosted by the FAO, thereby enhancing Indonesia's presence within the international network.
・Given this background, the presentation format followed this sequence: a keynote speech by Mr. Thomas, Director for Forest Fire Managment, followed by Deputy Director Dr. Isral outlining the overall picture (Indonesia's fire situation, explanation of Manggala Agni, explanation of the Fire Hub, explanation of Manggala Agni's capacity building activities). This was followed by a detailed explanation of the Global Fire Management Hub from FAO, and then explanations of the capacity building project contents from KFS and JICA. It was a good quality event that well reflected the organizers' intentions in its format.
・JICA reported on capacity building activities to advance Community Based Fire Management (CBFiM) and their concrete impacts. This is because one of the core activities of the Fire Hub being the promotion of CBFiM so that positioning the MAPD activity (fire department policy) currently being advanced by the technical program as CBFiM. This message was immediately understood by Deputy Director Dr. Isral, and after the event, we received a request from him that he expects the results of JICA's project are contributed to the Fire Hub.
・Judging from the content of the presentations, each capacity building activity focused only on the "implementation" of the activity, and only JICA project took into account the impact of the activity at the field level. We will disseminate information with a more up-front focus on "impact" and "sustainability."
