Signing of Record of Discussions on Technical Cooperation Project with Nepal: Career development and entrepreneurship support for returnees from Japan

On December 1, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Record of Discussions with the Government of Nepal in Kathmandu for the Project on Career Development and Entrepreneurship Support Program for International Migrants, a technical cooperation project.

In Nepal, the main domestic industries are limited to agriculture and tourism, and there are few job opportunities with sufficient salaries. As a result, the number of Nepalese people working abroad is rapidly increasing. With the consequent shortage of workers in the country, it is expected that returnee migrants who gain experience, connections, and funds while overseas will play an important role in the development of industry and the creation of jobs in Nepal. Many such Nepalese people live in Japan, and are expected to use the knowledge and experience gained in Japan to start their own businesses or find relevant work after returning to Nepal.

However, due to issues such as inadequate job opportunities and the lack of the knowledge and access to funds necessary for starting a business, their experience in Japan has so far been unable to contribute to the development of Nepal’s industry.

Considering these circumstances, this project will support the development of human resources returning from Japan by establishing and operating the Career Development and Entrepreneurship Support Program, which will provide information and mentoring services, thereby enabling the returnees to contribute to industry development in Nepal. In addition, the project will contribute to the achievement of SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) Goal 8 (decent work and economic growth).
