JICA President Tanaka Met with Ambassadors and Other Representatives of the Group of Latin America and the Caribbean (GRULAC) in Tokyo

JICA President Akihiko Tanaka met with the ambassadors and other representatives of 21 Latin American and Caribbean countries at JICA Headquarters on April 12. This meeting was held at the invitation of the Group of Latin America and the Caribbean (GRULAC), which consists of the diplomatic corps of 21 Latin American countries stationed in Tokyo.

At the meeting, the ambassadors of each country emphasized the importance of both the diversity of cooperation in the countries of the region, which have different characteristics, and triangular cooperation that takes advantage of linguistic and regional commonalities. They also discussed the significance of cooperation with various organizations including Pacific Alliance and the Central American Integration Organization (SICA), the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and the Development Bank of Latin American (CAF), etc. Furthermore, the ambassadors mentioned their countries’ expectations for efforts to be made to tackle development issues common to the region, such as renewable energy, hydrogen energy, and marine plastics.

In addition, the ambassadors implied their high trust in Japan and JICA, which have been providing various types of cooperation over the years, and expressed their expectations for new cooperation that makes even greater use of Japan's experience and technology. Both JICA and the ambassadors of each country reconfirmed the fact that JICA is an important partner in the development of Latin America and the Caribbean.

JICA President Tanaka then touched on the existence of the Nikkei (people of Japanese descent) community in the region and expressed his respect for their contribution as a bridge connecting the region and Japan.

JICA will continue to work closely with countries in Latin America and the Caribbean to contribute to the resolution of development issues in each country and region.

Mr. Alexander Salas Araya, Ambassador of Costa Rica to Japan, and ambassadors and representatives from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela.
