Burkina Faso is a landlocked country located in the south in Sahara Desert, sharing borders with six countries. It is expected to play an important role for keeping the peace and stability of the West Africa as well as promoting integration of regional economy. On the other hand, Burkina Faso is still one of the poorest countries in the world with low GNI per capita of 790 US dollars in 2020 (World Bank) compared with the average of countries in sub-Sahara Africa in the same year (1,478 US dollars in 2020, World Bank). In severe natural environment, about 80 percent of its labor force is engaged in the primary industries of agriculture and livestock, and the Government of Burkina Faso aims to accelerate the economic growth through agriculture development and the enhancement of human resource. JICA's support to Burkina Faso is primarily focused on 1) promoting the sustainable economic growth through agriculture development, 2) improving the quality of education, and 3) supporting the integration of regional economy.
