On January 26, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a grant agreement with the Government of Burkina Faso in Ouagadougou to provide grant aid of up to 1,006 million yen for the Project for the Improvement of Equipment for Road Maintenance.

In Burkina Faso—a landlocked country—despite the reliance on road transport for the majority of logistics that support imports and exports, most of the road network is significantly damaged due to an increase in road-traffic volume and inadequate maintenance, resulting in challenges in national road-traffic management. The country's road network serves as a logistics node connecting the coastal countries of Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, and Benin to the south, and the landlocked countries of Niger and Mali to the north. Therefore, the development of an international corridor connecting these countries through the improvement of the road network in Burkina Faso has become one of the highest priority development issues for the region.

This project will not only respond to the increasing traffic demand across the country by providing road maintenance and management equipment, but also strengthen the maintenance system of the country’s road network, which is becoming increasingly important as a logistics node for West African countries. The project, by contributing to the improvement of logistics in Burkina Faso, will therefore also contribute to the achievement of SDGs Goals 9 (Industry, innovation and infrastructure) and 11 (Sustainable cities and communities).
