Built at a cost of 16 million USD (650 million Birr), through a Grant Aid agreement with the Government of Japan, the project has built six boreholes, laid out 42kms of pipes and erected two reservoirs with the capacity of holding 4,000m3 and 1,000m3.

Present at the ceremony were: H.E. Ms. Takako ITO, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Ethiopia, H.E. Ahmed Shide, Minister of Finance of Ethiopia, Dr. Yilkal Kefale, President of Amhara National Regional State, Dr. Dires Sahilu, Mayor of Bahir Dar City and Dr. Mamaru Ayalew, Head of the Water, Irrigation and Energy Bureau in Amhara Region.

“This [project] is a step towards achieving SDG goals 3, 6 and 9,” remarked Ambassador ITO. The stated goals are focused on: achieving good health and well-being, supplying clean water and sanitation and developing resilient, inclusive and sustainable infrastructure.

JICA will now move on to the soft component of the project to provide technical support (training) to the Ethiopian counterparts on the management and operation of the booster pump stations, distribution stations, transmission lines, boreholes and more.
