Benefits of 5S and KAIZEN Impresses Hospitals, Promotes Mutual Learning

On December 13 representatives from the Ministry of Health (MoH), Yekatit 12 Hospital, St. Peter Hospital, the Kaizen Excellence Center (KEC) and JICA Ethiopia office visited Alert Hospital based in Addis Ababa to observe the hospitals’ implementation of 5S-KAIZEN¹.

JICA is supporting these hospitals to improve their operations using the 5S-KAIZEN management philosophy, in cooperation with MoH and KEC.

A representative from Alert Hospital acknowledged that since the hospital started implementing 5S -KAIZEN the work environment has improved, staff motivation has increased, and resources are being utilized efficiently.

The representatives were able to share in Alert’s lessons learned and to visit the pilot wards applying the 5S-KAIZEN process. They were impressed by the hospital’s admirable performance and said they would apply the lessons learned to their future 5S-KAIZEN activities.

¹5S is an acronym for each step of " Sort, Set, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain ". KAIZEN is implemented based on the positive mindset of employees fostered by 5S. KAIZEN works to improve the quality, safety, and productivity of health services through the implementation of KAIZEN activities in a process of gradually and continuously improving problems recognized by staff. Eventually, we aim for Total Quality Management (TQM), or KAIZEN, to be implemented continuously and voluntarily so that the organization operates effectively and efficiently, optimizing its functions. Through these initiatives, we aim to strengthen the quality of health care and the overall health system.
