JICA and INFIC advance senior care through new specialized facility in Pasig City

2025.03.20

A new Japanese-style elderly care facility in Pasig City was inaugurated today, March 20, 2025, marking an important milestone in strengthening elderly care services in the Philippines.

Developed through the collaboration of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and INFIC, Inc., a Japan-based company that specializes in advanced elderly care, the initiative underscores the importance of investing in quality and accessible healthcare as the Philippines prepares for the challenges of an aging population.

The 200sqm Elderly Care and Day Service Facility offers home care, day care, and both short- and long-term stay services. It was designed with accessibility and safety considerations, featuring handrails in bathrooms, step-free flooring, and wheelchair-accessible washstands to ensure comfort and security for elderly residents. A team of nine newly trained staff members and three Japanese specialists shall provide expert care while also training families in home care techniques.

With the country’s aging population expected to reach 11.6 million by 2025, per the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), the demand for elderly care continues to grow. JICA Philippines Chief Representative BABA Takashi acknowledged this demand during the Opening Ceremony for the project held on March 19, 2025, stating, It has become imperative to nurture future caregivers with specialized knowledge and skills to meet these growing challenges.”

This initiative was made possible through JICA’s Public-Private Partnership promotion scheme, which introduces Japanese private sector technologies and know-how to developing partners.

Pasig City, led by Mayor Vico Sotto, has been a proactive partner in strengthening healthcare services for the city’s growing elderly population.

Through Japan’s expertise in rehabilitation-focused and independence-oriented elderly care, the facility provides an opportunity to build local capacity in geriatric services. This aligns with JICA’s broader efforts in the Philippines to strengthen human security, promote social inclusion, and enhance public health systems.

Beyond providing care, the facility serves as a model for integrating innovation into senior healthcare. INFIC’s digital sensing care system, which was demonstrated during the Opening Ceremony, enhances independent living while easing the burden on caregivers. INFIC selected the Philippines for its first international expansion after a decade of research, recognizing the potential of the country’s caregiver workforce and its vital role in the future of elderly care.

JICA remains committed to supporting projects that foster inclusive, people-centered development in the Philippines. The success of this elderly care facility is expected to serve as a model for similar initiatives nationwide, ensuring that more Filipinos have access to quality, dignified care in their later years.
