A Small Step to Protect the Ocean’s Future — PNG Students Join Beach Cleanup on World Environment Day

2025.06.13
On June 5, 2025, in celebration of World Environment Day, a beach cleanup activity was held at Ela Beach in Port Moresby.
With the initiative of Mr. Uchiyama, a JICA Volunteer, working at Sogeri Primary School in Central Province, more than 60 students took part in the event, along with JICA
Volunteers, staff from the JICA Papua New Guinea Office, and representatives from the National Capital District Commission (NCDC). Together, they worked to collect plastic waste along the shoreline.
This year’s theme for World Environment Day was “Beat Plastic Pollution.” Seeing plastic bottles, bags, and other litter washed up on the beach, the students were able to witness the reality of environmental pollution and reflect on the importance of taking action to protect nature.
Expressing Environmental Messages Through Art
The day also included a special moment for two students from Sogeri Primary School, who were recognized for their outstanding entries in an international drawing competition held in Japan
. During the event, the students received certificates and commemorative gifts from Mr. Matsuoka, Chief Representative of JICA PNG. One student remarked, “I never expected my drawing would be recognized!”—making it a truly memorable day for everyone involved.
Learning About Coral Reefs and Hands-on Restoration
The event also featured an environmental education session about coral reefs.
Students learned about the important role that reefs play in marine ecosystems and the threats they face. After the lesson, they participated in a practical activity by attaching small coral fragments to a restoration frame.
Taking Action, Starting with Cleanup
To wrap up the event, all participants wore gloves and carried garbage bags to collect plastic waste and other litter along the beach.
The cleanup served as an opportunity for young people and local stakeholders to work together and experience the value of protecting the environment firsthand.
Mr. Uchiyama commented “I am teaching math and science at Sogeri Primary School, but I also carry out environmental education in addition to my regular activity. Many children did not know that plastic was not biodegradable and remained as pollution in the environment for long. It is very important for them to understand the importance of environmental protection and take actions for that.”
This hands-on experience is expected to inspire not only students but also everyone including adults to become more aware of environmental protection in their daily lives.
