The “Renewable Energy and Diesel Power Operation in Small Islands” short term training in Japan was successfully attended by Ms. Sharlyn Tomiang from National Energy Authority. Ms. Tomiang shared her experience by stating that “this has given me an insight into how renewable energy and the diesel power operation work together in small islands mixing theory with practical class”.

Also, she said as follows;
“With Japan’s known deep culture of respect, the learning interaction between the experts was humbling. The hands-on experience and site visitation where equipment demonstration and process application were interesting and effective. The skilled trainers from the power company, Okinawa Enetech Company, illustrated challenges faced by small islands and how renewable energy penetration has assisted these isolated islands.

Okinawa has a vibrant and diverse culture; its scenic environment & beautiful island was just like back home with light blue beaches and the tropical climate. The people were very respectful, helpful, polite, and friendly.”

Ms. Tomiang made a remark that “I was especially impressed with the elder population who were still around and very active. Their culture of discipline and respect is a powerful inspiration. One of the highlights was how they started off separating their waste into offices, schools & homes and that it became a norm, a lifestyle in helping to live in a cleaner, healthier environment. Through collective teamwork, we could reach the remote parts of Papua New Guinea through a renewable and sustainable power operation.”
