JICA’s Math App Making a Difference in Papua New Guinea!
2025.12.16
On Wednesday, December 3, JICA hosted a media tour at Gabone Primary School and Ginigolo Primary School in Rigo District to showcase how its math learning app was being used in classrooms and the positive impact it had on teachers and students.
This app was designed to improve students’ basic calculation skills through practice problems, explanatory videos, and tests. Students can earn points by completing exercises and using them to create original characters—making learning fun and engaging! Plus, the app worked even in offline environments.
From August 2024 to December 2025, JICA conducted pilot activities in Papua New Guinea—the first country in the world to implement this initiative! (Now expanding to Palau, Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, and Nepal.) The pilot program covered 12 schools across Rigo, Kairuku, and Hiri districts.
During the tour, about 30 Grade 4 and 5 students were observed learning at their own pace on tablets. Teachers reported improved attendance, better understanding of math, and increased interest in learning. Students said, “It feels like playing a game!” and “Math is fun now!”—a clear sign of success.

For a long time, JICA had been committed to improving education quality in PNG through projects like developing math and science textbooks, supporting teacher colleges, and providing remote learning opportunities via TV. Moving forward, JICA will continue working with partners to enhance education quality, including through this math app initiative.
