JICA Volunteers Share Field Insights with UNICEF and World Bank in PNG
2026.04.02
On March 16, 2026, JICA Volunteers working in Papua New Guinea (PNG) held a presentation session to share the results of their activities with education stakeholders from UNICEF and the World Bank. The session focused on the use of mathematics and science textbooks developed with JICA’s support, and highlighted insights gained through classroom practices and teacher training conducted by the JICA volunteers.
While the Accessibility to textbook has improved in PNG, challenges remain in ensuring their effective use in classrooms. In response, JICA Volunteers have introduced step-by-step lesson approaches and hands-on activities based on the textbooks, contributing to improvements in students’ understanding and critical thinking skills. Through teacher training, positive changes have also been observed in teaching practices, with more student-centered learning taking place. At the same time, issues such as limited training opportunities and textbook management remain, underscoring the importance of continuous teacher support and proper resource management.
During the Q&A session, participants raised questions on textbook utilization, lesson delivery, and teacher training, as well as challenges faced in classrooms, including large class sizes and limited teaching materials. Discussions also touched on textbook management and the potential use of ICT, highlighting the need for sustained efforts to improve the quality of education.
JICA will continue to support both classroom-level improvements and the development of supportive educational frameworks through the activities of JICA Volunteers and collaboration with relevant stakeholders, contributing to the enhancement of education quality in PNG.
